Why make a gold investment? For centuries gold has been used by countries as a means to trade with each other and by the rich to store up their own wealth. In addition, in times of economic depression and uncertainty with low interest rates, the threat of inflation and the risk in trading shares, investors have traditionally looked to gold as a safe haven for their fortune. A gold investment is considered to be a hedge against inflation since gold retains its value and consequently prevents people's savings being wiped out. However, it is generally accepted that investing in gold will never yield a particularly high return and will merely consolidate an investment and provide some insurance for your money. For the wealthy it is seen as a one of the best ways to pass down fortunes to other generations.
Gold investmentOther ways to invest in goldThere are in fact a number of ways of making a gold investment other than buying gold bars. One such option is to buy some gold coins. Gold bullion coins such as the South African gold Krugerrand
are popular investments and differ from gold bars as they have an
aesthetic quality and many of the older coins have historical value
which further increases their value to collectors and their overall
worth. Other ways to invest in goldOther ways to invest include buying shares in a gold mining company or investing in gold certificates. When investing in gold mining companies there are certain pitfalls involved as there are when investing in any industry. Generally as the price of gold increases, so will their profits. However, there are a certain number of other factors that you have to take into account such as the political situation in the country where the company is mining and the actual gold ore resource in the area. Such an investment will certainly offer greater rewards than an investment in gold bullion but also comes with greater risks. By purchasing a gold certificate you are effectively buying gold bullion without actually storing it yourself. The gold belongs to you but it will be stored in a secure location by the company from whom you bought the certificate. These different types of investments all have their advantages and disadvantages but it would be prudent to purchase gold bars or coins before attempting to diversify your gold investment portfolio.
