Gold coins

Over time, gold coins have been collected, as an investment or savings, or in earlier times, as a simple display of wealth. Gold coins have increased in popularity and value in recent years. Many countries have their own national gold bullion coin, often with a new design to commemorate the beginning of a new year. Some of these coins include the South African krugerrand, the British Brittania, the American gold eagle, the Canadian maple leaf, the Chinese gold panda, and the Australian gold nugget. Gold coin prices depend on a variety of different factors including age, rarity, and condition. Other things to consider when looking at gold coins for sale is the liquidity of the coin, its weight, purity and status in the gold bullion coin market.

The South African Krugerrand

The South African gold krugerrand has been the national bullion coin of South Africa since 1967, and was initially intended to be circulated as currency. In 1980 the krugerrand accounted for 90% of the gold market, and really set the trend for national bullion coins. Over 46 million ounces worth of gold krugerrand coin has been produced since it was first minted in 1967. The krugerrand comes in denominations of 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce. The "proof krugerrands", are rarer and are therefore sold at a higher margin than standard krugerrand coins. There are also several collector"s and commemorative gold coins for sale on the market.
